How To Make Butterbeer from Harry Potter at Home for Muggles ... and Squibs (non-alcoholic)

Butterbeer is a delicious butterscotch drink popular among witches and wizards in the Harry Potter universe of J. K. Rowling. Muggles around the world can enjoy the magical beverage while visiting the Wizarding World of Harry Potter at the Universal Orlando resort. Living in Orlando and being an annual passholder, I am proud to say that I have enjoyed the hallowed Butterbeer at the WWoHP in all three of it's renditions; cold, frozen and the recently introduced hot Butterbeer on numerous occasions. The cold version is my personal favorite of the 3 concoctions. Having tried the WWoHP Butterbeer many times and after many failed attempts trying recipes after scouring the internet, I believe I have finally brewed an acceptable draught of living dea....I mean Butterbear. I daresay a few sips will satisfy you all.

So first, we need our ingredients.
Butterbeer Ingredients

  • Smucker's Butterscotch Topping (by ice cream toppings in the supermarket or buy it here on Amazon)
  • Heavy Whipping Cream (I prefer the can over the carton) 
  • Imitation Vanilla, Butter, Nut Extract (Butterscotch basically, buy this at your local grocery store)
  • Cream Soda (Spend the extra money on A&W or one of the old timey glass bottle cream sodas for best results)
  • Bowl
  • Spoon
  • Ministry of Magic mug (or whatever lame mug you probably have instead)

The Lean Startup

I am a college student at the UCF and my minor is Entrepreneurship. Recently I read a book for one of my classes called, "The Lean Startup" by Eric Ries. I thought I would do a little blurb on what it's about.
So the Lean Start-up methodology is a new way of approaching start-up management and of teaching entrepreneurial management to students. Many universities across the nation have adopted the lean start-up principles. So what are those principles. The standard concept is that instead of developing a detailed business plan, develop a small business model and create an MVP, or minimum viable product (more on that later),  and talk to and test it with potential customers, then use the feedback they give you to improve the product and then do it all over again. 

According to Ries, professors and entrepreneurs have subscribed to two entrepreneurial mindsets: The Just Do It method coined by Nike and the traditional planning method of developing a well thought out business plan, then using practical and refined management techniques perfected in big businesses. Each method has it's Achilles's heal . "Just doing it" often leads to chaos and while many great entrepreneurs have taken to this school of thought and been great successes, many more startups have resulted in a chaotic mess doomed to failure because they lacked the infrastructure to sustain any traction they may have developed. The opposing method of developing a well thought out business plan can also lead to failure. Ries compares this method to planning for a special shuttle launch. If you spend a great deal of time planning and then launch, you better hope all of your calculations are correct because one small miscalculation will result in catastrophe. The business plan method can also lead entrepreneurs to simply do nothing, forever planning with no action. This is what inevitably leads startups to abandon planning and "just do it." However, if the business plan or the "just do it" approaches do appear to be successful and the startup gains some traction the application of traditional management techniques is sure to doom the fragile firm's future (say that 5 times fast.) This approach Ries likens to trying to fit a square peg into a round hole. Start-ups are very different from an established business because they, "operate under conditions of extreme uncertainty," and thus require specific management processes. The Lean Startup is a hybrid form of startup methodology and entrepreneurial management. 

The Lean Start-up operates on the concept known as the Feedback loop, which is a method of learning from customers and incorporating what they want into your product or service. The Build, Measure, Learn process is the road map of the feedback loop. First you build the MVP, which is the simplest version of your product/service that can get you through the feedback loop. The MVP is not a finished product, but rather a prototype of the product in laymen's terms. After you build it you show it to potential customers and measure their responses and data collected from the interactions with the product/service. Finally, you learn from the feedback you receive and apply that knowledge to the next iteration of the product/service. This method allows entrepreneurs to build a product from the ground up that is tailored to the customer's wants and needs.

The Lean Startup provides a new method of accounting for start-ups, that Ries calls Innovation Accounting. The purpose is to track a startup's progress so you know when to pivot or persevere. Pivoting is when the start-up makes a change in their strategy, such as changing from a direct sales to a subscription based revenue model. The product/service is continuously optimized based on customer feedback to create new iterations, the strategy is occasionally subject to a pivot moment, but the vision of the start-up does not change. The vision is the end goal, which for any start-up should be to create a sustainable business that can be scaled.

I certainly recommend this book to entrepreneurs, both current and aspiring, if anything just to learn what innovation accounting is because it would take too long for me to explain it here. Innovation accounting is a valuable tool in measuring the performance of a startup with useful metrics so you know when it is time to pivot. Crate Vintage Club 50 volume/gain problem

I own a Crate VC5115 guitar amp and like almost all owners of the amp I have experienced the problem that all vintage club owners have with the clean channel. While the drive channel works perfectly fine, the clean channel has random spikes in gain and volume. I would be playing on the clean channel and suddenly the amp would get extremely loud.
Well, I researched the problem online and found that many people also had this problem and most people said that it was because the signal path went through all three of the input jacks and that if one of them was oxidized it would mess up the others. So I bought deoxit in the hopes that this would solve my problem and it did not. I have read many ideas on what could be the problem and nothing would fix it so I finally decided to take the amp apart and have a look. So, for any owner of a Crate VC amp having the Clean channel problem, plz do not get rid of this wonderful, great sounding tube amp because I am going to tell you the problem and how to fix it.

First, if you have never worked on a tube amp plz do not do so if you do not know how to discharge the capacitors. Try to find someone who knows how to do this if you can.
WARNING!! Tube amps hold voltage sometimes even months after being unplugged and turned off. This voltage can be deadly, so work at your own risk and never put two hands inside of the amp at the same time. Keep one behind your back to keep the voltage from running through your body constantly.

You can look on youtube for videos that show you how to discharge the voltage from a tube amp if you want to do this yourself.

Alright, the problem is simply a blown capacitor. Mine was the biggest one on the board and my dad, who used to be an electrician, noticed it was blown as soon as he looked at the board. So, take the screws out of the back of the amp and remove the back cover. Then examine the capacitors, which are the large cylinders on the circuit board. DO NOT TOUCH ANYTHING! (If you really can't find information on discharging capacitors I will make a video tutorial, just let me know in the comments section.) Ok well, the blown capacitor should be blue, or atleast mine was, and the top of the capacitor should have a bubble. The blown capacitor will have a bubble at the top of the cylinder. Once you identify te capacitor that is blown you will have to go on ebay and purchase a new one. Mine was a 16000 uf 12V capacitor I believe which I got on ebay for $8. Long story short, you need to remove the blown capacitor (after discharging the voltage) and solder the new one on.

Soldering on a circuit board requires a special soldering iron that sucks the solder off of the old capacitor before you can remove it. Be very careful and try to find someone who has experience soldering circuit boards.
